Class¡GSpring Semester (Feb.-Jun. 2007), Wed. 13:20-15:10 (Course in English)

Course Objective¡G     

The primary goal of this class is to introduce the student to the evolving nature of international organizations within the broader context of changing international relations. Emphasis will be placed on the idea of IO and the United Nations organizations in the fall semester and functional and Asia-Pacific international organizations in the spring semester.

Grading¡G

You will be evaluated on the basis of your performance in four areas: participation and attendance, two 48-hour take-home tests, simulation paper and presentation, and midterm.. The midterm examination will draw on the readings as well as lecture notes. Questions of essay section will be given one week before the scheduled date of midterm.   In principle, the last 30 minutes of every class will be the discussion section. It is therefore important that you attend class regularly and participate actively.

Participation and Attendance 20%

Two 48-hour take-home tests: 30%

Simulation Paper and Presentation: 20%

Simulation Paper:

Every team will be required to conduct original research focusing on the member economy of APEC represented in the simulation. The detailed 15-page simulation group paper, due June 4, must include the following four components:

1) an overview of the political and economic environments of the member economy ;
2) a critical analysis of current issues facing the member economy;
3) a detailed statement of the position and policies of the member economy on some major issues; and
4) an annotated bibliography of at least 15 recent sources, including books, scholarly articles, news articles, government documents, and web sites.

Attendance Policy: Strongly Recommended

Class begins promptly at 1:20 p.m. on Wed.  PLEASE BE ON TIME.
Any student missing class more than 4 times will be dropped from the course for excessive absences.  All excuses are considered the same.
